Two quotations for the “same” machine can differ by half. What actually differs, which specifications to insist on in writing, and the checks to run before payment.
Two suppliers quote the same machine name. One is forty per cent cheaper. In our experience the difference is almost never a bargain and almost always a specification that was never written down. This guide is about how to compare properly, whether you buy from us or from anyone else.
Where the price difference usually hides
| Item | What a thin quotation leaves out |
|---|---|
| Structure | Plate thickness and ribbing of the base frame. A lighter frame chatters under load and loses alignment. |
| Motor | Rated kW, make, insulation class and duty. An undersized motor works until it is run all shift. |
| Electricals | Make of contactors, overload relays and switchgear, and whether the panel is built to a wiring diagram you receive. |
| Hydraulics | Pump make, working pressure, tank capacity, filtration and seal specification. |
| Tooling | Whether dies, cutters or blades are included, and how many. |
| Testing | Whether the machine is run on your material before dispatch, and whether that is recorded. |
| Documentation | Wiring diagram, hydraulic circuit, parts list and operating instructions. |
Ask for these seven lines in writing from every supplier. The quotations become comparable immediately, and the cheap one usually stops being cheap.
Fix the specification before comparing prices
- Component drawing, material grade and size range.
- Output required per shift, and the number of shifts.
- Supply voltage, phases and frequency at the installation site.
- Floor space and height available, and crane or lifting capacity for installation.
- Which consumables you want included in the first order.
Why Ludhiana
Punjab's engineering cluster around Ludhiana grew up around bicycle, fastener and machine tool manufacture, so castings, fabrication, machining, heat treatment and electrical assembly are all locally available. That matters for two practical reasons: build times are shorter when subcontract work is around the corner, and spares can be made again years later. Our own works builds mechanical assemblies, base frames, pneumatic clamping and electrical wiring in-house; you can read what that covers on the about page, and see which cities we supply on the India supply network page.
Acceptance checks before the balance payment
Agree these before the order, not at dispatch:
- Run-off on your material, with the finished piece gauged and photographed.
- Cycle time measured during that run, not quoted from a catalogue.
- No-load run for a stated period, with bearing temperature and noise checked.
- Electrical check: insulation resistance, earth continuity, correct overload settings.
- Documentation handed over with the machine, not promised afterwards.
Every machine we build is powered up and run on real material before it is crated; ask any supplier for the same and for the recording. Examples are on our machine videos page.
GST, freight and installation within India
- Confirm whether the quotation is inclusive or exclusive of GST, and the HSN code used.
- Agree who arranges transport, and whether the price includes loading and unloading.
- Check the machine's transport dimensions against the route, particularly height for a covered vehicle.
- Agree what installation support is included and what is chargeable.
After sales: the part that decides the next purchase
Ask three questions before ordering:
- Which parts are consumable, what do they cost, and how long do they last?
- What is the lead time for a replacement die, seal kit or contactor?
- Who answers the phone when the machine stops, and what information will they need?
Buy a first set of consumables with the machine. Downtime waiting for a part costs more than the part.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy new or used?
Used equipment can make sense for occasional work. For production, the deciding factor is whether spares and tooling are still available for that model; if not, the saving disappears with the first breakdown.
Is a machine with a bigger motor better?
Not by itself. Motor rating has to be matched to the structure and the drive. A large motor on a light frame produces vibration, not output.
How long does a machine take to build?
It depends on the machine and the order book. Ask for a date counted from order confirmation and advance received, and ask what the dispatch is contingent on.
Can machines be built for a specific component?
Yes; most of what we build is set up around a customer's component. Send the drawing, material and output required, and the machine is quoted to that work rather than to a catalogue entry.
Send your component drawing, material size range, output per shift and supply voltage, and our Ludhiana works will quote a machine specified line by line. Browse the machinery catalogue or send your requirement.
Senior Machine Tool Design & Production Engineering Division, Ludhiana Works
Authored by machine tool builders at our Ludhiana manufacturing works. Every technical parameter, metallurgy guideline, electrical formula, and production cycle stated in this guide is reviewed by our shop-floor engineers who assemble, wire, and execute material trials before global dispatch to GCC and domestic manufacturing facilities.
