Saudi industrial supply runs at 60 Hz, which changes how a machine is built. What to specify, how long shipping to Dammam takes, and the conformity paperwork to arrange early.
Saudi Arabia is the largest construction market in the Gulf, and it is also the market where the most machinery arrives wrongly specified. The reason is a single number: industrial supply in the Kingdom commonly runs at 60 Hz, while most machinery built in India and much of Asia is wound for 50 Hz.
Why frequency changes the machine
An induction motor's speed follows the supply frequency. Run a 50 Hz motor on 60 Hz and it turns roughly 20 per cent faster. The consequences are practical:
- Cutting, threading and welding speeds all shift, so the cycle the machine was set up for no longer applies.
- Gearboxes and bearings see higher speeds than their duty rating assumed.
- Hydraulic pumps deliver more flow, which raises oil temperature.
- Motor cooling, torque and starting current all change.
The fix is simple and costs nothing extra if it is specified at the start: state 380 V, three phase, 60 Hz with the order, and the motors, starters, pulleys and control transformers are ordered to suit. Fixing it after the machine lands means changing motors and re-sizing drives on site.
Port, transit and inland distance
Machinery for the Eastern Province and Riyadh generally discharges at King Abdulaziz Port, Dammam; consignments for Jeddah and the west coast route through Jeddah Islamic Port. Sea transit from the western Indian ports we ship through is typically in the region of six to nine days to Dammam, after which inland haulage to Riyadh or Jubail adds to the schedule. Details are kept on our Saudi Arabia market page.
Conformity paperwork: arrange it before shipment
Saudi Arabia operates a conformity programme for imported goods administered under SASO, and machinery consignments commonly require a certificate of conformity issued before shipment by an authorised body. What matters commercially is the sequence: the inspection happens at origin, so it has to be arranged while the machine is still at the works. Arranging it after the container has sailed is expensive and can delay clearance.
Ask your customs broker which route applies to your consignment and product code, and tell your supplier early, because the inspection body will want the invoice, packing list and technical documentation in a particular form.
Specify for heat and dust
- Panel enclosure rating, and cooling where the machine stands in direct sun.
- Hydraulic oil grade for high ambient temperature, with tank capacity for continuous duty.
- Air and oil filtration; fine dust is the usual cause of early valve and seal failure.
- Corrosion protection for machined surfaces during the crossing.
Packing and marking
- Seaworthy crating, machine bolted to the base.
- ISPM-15 marked heat treated timber where wood is used.
- Gross weight, lifting points and centre of gravity marked on the crate.
- Documentation pouch protected against moisture.
What Saudi buyers usually order
Scaffolding manufacturers supplying the Kingdom's projects buy cuplock and ringlock welding machinery with prop and base jack production. Rebar yards buy rebar threading and coupler machinery to meet mechanical splice specifications. Pipe fabricators buy threading and beveling equipment.
Commissioning checklist
- Verify supply voltage and frequency at the machine terminals, not at the panel board.
- Check phase rotation before the first start.
- Run the first batch on your own material and gauge it.
- Record oil temperature after an hour of continuous running.
- Keep the run-off recording from the works for comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Is 60 Hz build more expensive?
Not materially, when it is ordered from the start. The cost comes from correcting a 50 Hz machine after delivery.
How long is shipping to Dammam?
Roughly six to nine days port to port from western India, plus build time and inland haulage. Ask for the figures separately when you plan installation.
Who arranges the conformity certificate?
It is issued at origin by an authorised inspection body, so the supplier and your broker have to coordinate it before shipment. Raise it at the quotation stage.
Can the machine be tested before dispatch?
Yes. Machines are run on material before crating, and the run can be recorded on your bar or tube size so you see the cycle before it ships.
Tell us your component, material range, output per shift and confirm your site frequency, and our Ludhiana works will quote a machine built for it. See the Saudi Arabia page or send your requirement.
